Miles To Go Before I Sleep
I was born in a 16th century house called Minton Cottage in Godalming, Surrey. It's still there.
I grew up here (although there are no grown-ups in the theatre). Lewis Carroll retired here with his spinster sisters. He's buried in the local church.
I don't know how I got the sobriquet of Boy Wonder, but it got me into a lot of fights in school.
I was a ventriloquist, a singer, an impressionist, but I could never dance!
I still do crosswords!
At 16 I was the youngest performer to appear at the club.
Recording my first single at the Abbey Road studios. My manager had changed my name to Steve Perry -- don't ask!
This was from a shoot for a fan mag. There was a psychic at the photo shoot who revealed a hidden secret in the photographer's past that made him drop a very expensive camera. She read my future too, and it has proved to be true thus far.
My A&R man at Decca became infamous for turning down the Beatles.
Mel Torme's step-daughter Tammy and I were linked romantically in the teen mags, but we were just good friends. Mel Torme took me under his wing, which I still regard as one of the highlights of my career.
This was taken just before I was brought over to the States by Merv Griffin. Take note of the made-to-measure Dougie Millings suit (tailor to the Beatles) and the Pinet Italian shoes.
The show was televised from The Little Theatre on W. 44th St., next door to Sardi's. The Little Theatre was renamed The Helen Hayes Theatre.
I opened for Joan Rivers when she was just becoming a big name. Upstairs at the same club was a revue starring Madeline Kahn, Ruth Buzzi and Fannie Flagg.
While I was pursuing my fortune in New York, Toni was an actress in Los Angeles.
Toni with Zeus, her talking dog. She had tricked trained Zeus and he worked in movies and on commercials. Here he is giving George Burns a big wet one.
I had relocated to Los Angeles at this time, but I was not to cross paths with Toni for another 12 years.
One of the funniest shows ever. From left to right: Mike Douglas, Zeus, Toni, Steve Allen (on the floor), Marvin Hamlisch and David Brenner.
Toni & Zeus won hands down!
Toni & Zeus with Chuck Barris.
Zeus with the Bionic Woman. Zeus was the voice of the Bionic Dog. Lindsay can still be seen on TV doing Sleep Number Mattress commercials.
Toni has asked Zeus, "Who am I?", and Zeus is saying "Mama."
I was a lucky man the day that Toni walked into my life and my heart.
Look at you
I'll always see that first big smile from you
You'll always be that young to me
That's all I need to see; the rest can fade away
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep . . .
.
